Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death the family, it was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young toddler. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. Ford joined in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that it was not the right venue for her. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement after her third try she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Apart from her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
